Village Circle

Supporting families and schools in helping children build friendships, social confidence and kindness through real-world experiences

Most children will, at times, experience friendship difficulties, unkindness from peers or feel unsure where they fit. Many of these experiences are transient and help build resilience and problem-solving skills as part of normal development.

Some situations, however, are more complex or subtle and can be difficult for children to navigate on their own. They can lead to ongoing unhappiness or isolation if they go unnoticed or unsupported, and may be difficult for educators to identify early.

Village Circle provides a structured, supportive way for the parent community to help bridge this gap.

How it works

Supporting children socially requires sound judgement, sensitivity and care from parents and educators alike.

Parents are often faced with a difficult question: when is it helpful to step in, and when is it better to step back? And if stepping in is appropriate, what is the most constructive course of action?

Village Circle provides practical, balanced guidance and support to help parents make these decisions thoughtfully and proportionately, taking the full context of each situation into account.

We support parents to understand when and how to help their child manage social challenges independently, and when additional support may be helpful.

We also offer a parent support network made up of other parents within the same year group who have chosen to opt in and be part of the Village Circle. Parents are guided in using this support network in a thoughtful, balanced and constructive way — always with the aim of achieving the best outcome for their own child, other children in the year group and the wider parent community.

Participation in Village Circle is flexible and opt-in. Parents choose how they wish to be involved and which types of communication they wish to participate in. Preferences can be adjusted over time, allowing families to engage in ways that feel appropriate for them.

All communication is guided by clear expectations around respect, discretion and care, ensuring that sensitive matters are handled thoughtfully and in the best interests of all children involved.

Where discussions become unproductive or difficult to resolve, Village Circle can support families by facilitating access to a professional mediator to help guide conversations toward an appropriate and constructive outcome for all involved.

HOW VILLAGE CIRCLE HELPS

By helping parents better understand what may be happening for their own child — or for other children in the year group — and by providing a safe, structured way for parents within the same year group to support one another, communities can respond earlier and more constructively.

This approach not only helps children who are struggling socially, but also encourages empathy, understanding and kindness among peers.

Village Circle is a parent-led support system that helps families address concerns before they escalate, reducing the likelihood that schools are later required to manage more serious, entrenched situations involving distressed students, families and staff. In doing so, Village Circle complements school wellbeing efforts while supporting parents and children and building a stronger, happier community.

How parents become part of a structured and supportive community

  1. Join your year group

  2. Choose your participation preferences

  3. Support early connection and inclusion

  4. Build a trusted and supportive parent community

  5. Maintain respectful and constructive communication
